One question I have been asked a couple of times on there in messages is does Petsmart drug test?
It’s quite surprising with big companies that despite the fact that they would be expected to have a strict drug test policy, the information online, and even through word-of-mouth is often contradictory. Some people say they don’t at certain times, other people say they do.
So I’ve done some research, and called in some favors from friends, in order to answer the question does Petsmart drug test, so you don’t get caught out.
The Petsmart Drug Test Policy 2017
This is actually incredibly unusual in my experience, but a quick Google search actually brings up the official Petsmart drug test policy for 2017.
It’s the real deal, a downloadable pdf file right there on the Petsmart website.
To quickly give you the lowdown on exactly what their policy is, the key points are:
- Applicants for employment can be tested during the application process. It doesn’t say however at what point in that process, or if it’s 100% mandatory. So it looks like it’s at their discretion.
- Existing employees can be spot tested at any time, or after an accident.
- Petsmart may request a drug test if they have reasonable suspicion that you are under the influence of drugs.
- If you are returning to work after a period of absence due to self declared drug problems.
- Petsmart pilots, and other people in “safety sensitive positions” are also subject to mandatory drug testing, periodically and randomly. I’m guessing you will be told if it’s a safety sensitive position on application.
So that’s pretty clear generally, and apart from local discretion, it appears that the Petsmart drug test policy is quite comprehensive.
So Does Petsmart Drug Test On First Interview?
The answer this question appears to be that no, Petsmart does not drug test on first interview.
This is in line with every other company I’ve ever found. It would simply be very expensive to drug test everyone coming for first interview.
Think about it, if you advertise a position, you could have 50 first interviewees, which you then narrow down to a handful for a second interview, and then one person is offered employment. It makes no sense to vet applicants for drugs, only the person the job is offered to.
When Does Petsmart Drug Test?
As you now know, there are specific situations when Petsmart will request you take a drug test.
And you also know that Petsmart do not drug test on first interview.
What’s clear is that they do have a comprehensive policy for people they offer a job too, and for people who work for them. I’m getting the feeling that they don’t do much random drug testing unless you turn up smashed, but they reserve the right to.
It appears to be mainly if you cause an accident, even if it’s off site but in company time, then you probably will get called up for a drug test.
On top of that you need to be aware that in line with every other employer out there, if you refuse to take a request a drug test, then it will definitely be in your job contract that they reserve the right to terminate your employment with immediate effect.
So the bottom line here is that if you are thinking of working for Petsmart, or you are an existing employee (bizarrely known as an associate), then you need to be smart and have some strategies in place just in case.
Petsmart Drug Test: How To Pass
If Petsmart offer you a job then they aren’t going to ask you for a sample immediately. You are going to get a couple of days to prepare.
The reason I can say this with confidence is that in the official Petsmart drug test policy book I found online, it clearly states that Petsmart will pay for any pre-employment drug testing. They wouldn’t state that if it was going to be a Petsmart employee taking the sample.
So if you think you might get the job, then you need to make sure you are prepared by having some good quality synthetic urine ready. I recommend you only consider Sub Solution, as its really high quality and contain everything to make the urine looked real.
You should get a choice of where you can go locally to submit your sample, most often Labcorp or Quest Diagnostics. I’ve never known one of these tests to be supervised, especially pre-employment ones, so you should be completely safe to submit a fake urine sample:
- Uric acid
- Heat pad/powder to get correct temperature
Other drinks are crap and unreliable so don’t bother with them, you need the real deal, and only Rescue Cleanse and Mega Clean are high quality enough to guarantee you getting through that drug test. Please don’t try and cut corners by ordering something cheap, or something you read online is recommended on a forum, these are the only two I’ve ever found that I consistently reported is working.
You could just order whatever you need after you’ve been offered the job, but I would strongly suggest that if you are thinking of applying for a job at Petsmart, or any other employer, that you have both fake urine and detox drink ordered and in your home so that you are always ready.
